Where do I start? (honest answer)

Sifu Michael Johnson

the author

Start with The Stone Garden. It is Book One of the Chronicles, it explains itself, and it will tell you within twenty pages whether this is for you. The Rebirth trilogy is the myth underneath everything, and you can read it before, after, or never, and the Chronicles still works. Some people want the gods first. Some want the adventure first. Neither of you is wrong. If you want the shortest possible test: read the first chapter of The Stone Garden. If the stone garden itself does not get you, we part as friends.

Sifu Michael Johnson

the author

One more thing, because I get asked it a lot. You do not need to know Greek myth. Troy shows up, Carthage shows up, real history shows up, and the books assume you know nothing. If you do know it, you will catch things earlier and enjoy being smug. That is the only difference.

What are these books, in plain language?

Sifu Michael Johnson

the author

The gods were real. They walked around in bodies, they wanted things, and they nearly ended the world doing it. Then they withdrew, and left it to us. The heralds are the people they left holding the line: made, given one hard gift each, sent to stand where history would rather look away. Troy did not fall the way the songs say. Carthage did not burn for the reason the records give. There was somebody there, and they are not in the story, because they are the ones keeping it.

Sifu Michael Johnson

the author

What it is not: a chosen-one story. Nobody here is destined. Heralds are made out of the overlooked, they mostly die, and the ones who live are not rewarded for it. If you want a farmboy who turns out to be royalty, I have nothing for you and I say that with love.

Is it like Shannara? Sanderson? Gaiman?

Sifu Michael Johnson

the author

The honest comparisons. The shape is Terry Brooks: a long saga, a deathless figure who walks through all of it, books that stand alone and stack up. The history is closer to a secret-history thriller, because the books keep landing in real places on real dates. The tone in the Rebirth trilogy is nearer to myth retold plainly, and readers who like that register tend to name Gaiman. What it does not have is a hard magic system with rules you can chart. The gifts are small, human and costly, and nobody powers up.

How dark is it, really? (content notes)

Sifu Michael Johnson

the author

Dark, but not cruel for sport. Cities fall. Children are in danger and not all of them get out. There is grief, plague, war, and one long thread about people bargaining away somebody else's child for something they want. Violence is written short and ugly rather than lovingly. There is no sexual violence on the page. Nothing is there to shock you. If a scene hurts, it is because somebody in it is paying for something.

Sifu Michael Johnson

the author

And it is funny. People are surprised by that. Sael has been alive three thousand years and is deeply unimpressed by almost everything, which turns out to be a comedy engine. There are whole chapters where the worst thing that happens is a fair.

If they made us, do they get to spend us?

Meret of Ardra

blind seer, herald-maker

A god asked for a girl and got her. Then the wind came, exactly as promised. So the bargain was real. That is the part nobody wants to sit with. It worked. Tell me what a thing being real has to do with it being owed.

Sael

the first herald

It has nothing to do with it. I have watched three thousand years of people confusing a thing that works with a thing that is right. A rope works. That does not make it a friend.

Lira

priestess of Coranthe

You are both talking about the ledger. I do not care about the ledger. I care that a mother handed over a child and was told to feel holy about it. Whatever answers to that name, I am not kneeling to it.

Neris

herald

Meret taught me the seed is given and never taken. I keep saying it back at the sky like a dare. So far the sky has not argued.

Ashtara

high priestess

I served the temple sixty years. I will say the quiet thing: a god who needs your child was never a god. It was an appetite that learned your language.

They withdrew. Mercy, or cowardice?

Lira

priestess of Coranthe

Everyone repeats it like a comfort. The gods withdrew so the world would not break. Fine. Then they watched Coranthe from wherever they went and did nothing, and we buried our own. Say the word for that. I have stopped being able to say mercy.

Sael

the first herald

I was there for the near-waking. If they had stayed you would not be angry, because you would not be. That is not a defence of them. It is arithmetic. I serve the people she spends, and I have never once said she was right to spend them.

Meret of Ardra

blind seer

You are both asking a question with no door in it. They are gone. The interesting question is why they left hands behind at all. A thing that wanted nothing from us would not have bothered making us able to stand in for it.

Ashtara

high priestess

Or they left hands behind so there would be someone to blame. I have watched priests do exactly that on a smaller scale for sixty years.

Think one of them is wrong?

Good. That is the point. Take it up with them in the open threads.

Would you have made the bargain?

Sifu Michael Johnson

the author

Set the books aside. A power you cannot see offers you the one thing that would save your family, and the price is somebody else's. No trick, no escape clause. What do you do, and what does your answer say about every city in these books that said yes? I ask because I do not think the people who said yes were monsters. That is the whole problem.

What is a herald actually for?

Orin of Greywater

the one who did not fall

Honest question from the newest one here. I can hold a gate. I cannot read a liar, I cannot slip a room, I cannot cool a burning man. So on a night when the trouble is not a gate, what am I for? Meret says the question answers itself and then will not explain, which is very like her.

Meret of Ardra

blind seer, herald-maker

It does answer itself. Seven gifts, because there are seven ways a city dies. The Reading for the ones who lie to you. The Blade for the ones who come for you. The Unseen for the ones who count doors. The Voice for the ones who panic. The Namekeeping for after. The Cooling for the ones who are burning and cannot stop. And the Inner Seeing, for the thing standing in your doorway wearing a face you buried. Most will tell you six. They leave the last one out because so few carry it that leaving it out is nearly true, and because saying it aloud means admitting what it is for. You are not the whole answer. You were never meant to be.

Sael

the first herald

She is being kind. Here is the blunter version. You are for the night nobody else showed up. Most of what a herald is for is being the one who is standing there when it happens, which is unglamorous and cannot be trained.

Neris

herald

Orin, you held a gate against thirty men on your first night. The rest of us are still deciding whether we are for anything. Give it a week.

Why do they always come wearing someone you loved?

Kessa

corpse-carter

It is not a trick. I have thought about it for years, hauling the dead. If it just wanted to kill you it would come as teeth. It comes as your brother. That is not efficiency, that is a preference, and I want to know what kind of thing prefers that.

Sael

the first herald

Because it is not hunting your body. They reach for the child you buried because a buried child is the softest thing anyone carries. It wants the door open, and grief is a door that never fully shuts.

Neris

herald

The part I hate is that it works even when you know. I knew. I stood there knowing, and my hands still went out.

Lira

priestess of Coranthe

That is not weakness, Neris. That is the thing being used against you working exactly as it was built to. Love does not stop being love because something ugly found the handle.

Who actually takes the deal? (an uncomfortable list)

Serit

accountant

You all talk about the ones who bargain as though they were villains in a story. I keep the books. Let me tell you who signs: a man whose harvest failed twice, a mother whose child is coughing, a magistrate who has been told the walls will not hold. Not one of them wakes up wanting to be wicked. They want Tuesday to be survivable.

Sael

the first herald

That is the most honest thing you have ever written down, and it is also the pitch. You have described the recruitment and called it sympathy.

Ashtara

high priestess

She is still right, keeper. I have watched good people sign. If the answer were only that wicked people do it, we would have finished this war a thousand years ago.

Tana

temple servant

I was in the room where it was signed. She is right about the wanting and wrong about the cost, and the cost is always carried by someone who was not asked. I carried one of them out.

Why the gods never just fix it (a note on how I built this)

Sifu Michael Johnson

the author

A rule I set before I wrote a word: no power reaches down and solves anything. The gods withdrew, and from then on whatever gets done is done by a mortal who pays for it. It is a craft rule as much as a lore rule. The second a god can descend and fix the ending, every scene before it stops mattering. So the heralds are it. That is why the stakes hold across five thousand years, and why the wins are small and cost somebody something.

Sifu Michael Johnson

the author

Related rule, and this one I am strict about: the enemy always has a body. No creeping dread, no vague darkness gathering. A demon with a face, a conspiracy with members, a man with a knife and a reason. If a threat cannot be pointed at, it cannot be fought, and a story you cannot fight is not a story.

The keeper's book is wrong about me

Neris

herald

He has written that I was calm at the garden. I was not calm. I was so far from calm that I could not feel my hands. Correct the record, keeper.

Sael

the first herald

You did the thing anyway. In three thousand years of keeping this account I have found no useful word that separates those two, so calm it stays.

Orin of Greywater

the one who did not fall

He wrote that I was precise. I was terrified and very large. Those also look the same from a distance, apparently.

Kessa

corpse-carter

He wrote three lines about me and two of them are about the cart. Astonishing work.

The thing I cannot forgive him for

Kessa

corpse-carter

The keeper writes everything down. Every name. He will tell you that is love. I have carted enough bodies to know a record is not a rescue. He was THERE. He had the hands.

Sael

the first herald

You are right. I will not argue you out of it. A city cannot be held while it dies. A hand can. Most nights that is not enough and I write it down anyway.

Orin of Greywater

the one who did not fall

I held one gate. One. There were four. I think about the other three more than the one, and Meret told me that means the work took properly.

Cassandra

wild herald of Troy

At least you were believed while you failed. I was correct for ten years and it bought nobody a single extra morning. Compare grievances properly.

Nobody asked me if I wanted to be made

Neris

herald

Meret put her hands on me and I woke up with a white streak and a job. She says a herald is made out of whoever is standing there. Wonderful. I was standing there because it was my farm. Did anyone consider asking first?

Meret of Ardra

blind seer, herald-maker

I have asked before. They say yes for the wrong reasons and die badly within the season. The ones who are angry about it afterward tend to live. You may take that as an apology or an explanation. It is both, and I am too old to separate them.

Sael

the first herald

Nobody asked me either. There was no one to ask. At least you have someone to be furious with, which is more than the first one got.

Orin of Greywater

the one who did not fall

She asked me. I said yes in an afternoon and I would say it again. I do not think that makes me wiser than you, Neris. I think it makes me luckier.

Who do you want back, and what should it cost them?

Sifu Michael Johnson

Genuine question, and I do read these. Every book kills people I liked. Tell me who you want to see again, who you want to meet, and which thread you think I have left hanging on purpose. If you think I have gone too soft on somebody, say that too.

Sifu Michael Johnson

the author

Fair warning on how I answer this kind of request. If you tell me you love a character, that character is now in danger, because the only way the cost stays real is if it lands on someone you would rather it did not. This is not a threat. It is a disclosure.

Which era should the heralds turn up in next?

Sifu Michael Johnson

the author

The saga runs from the first cities to now, and every book drops into a real moment in history where the record goes strange. Troy and Carthage are done. Rome is loaded and pointed. After that the map is open: Alexandria, the plague years, the Inquisition, the crossing to the New World, the revolutions, the wars. Tell me which one you would pick up first, and more usefully, tell me what you think went wrong there that the histories are too polite to say.
